John Mahama pledges to abolish betting tax if elected in 2024 elections

John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated his commitment to abolishing the 10% tax on betting and gaming winnings introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Speaking at a campaign event with young people at the Bukom Arena in Accra, Mahama emphasized that the tax unfairly impacts those who rely on betting as a means of financial support during challenging economic times.

Mahama acknowledged the importance of betting for many youths who turn to it as a way to make ends meet in the absence of job opportunities.

“Boys are hustling and there are no jobs, so they do a little betting for some beans (food). You see, so I understand. It’s a matter that concerns the youth very much,” he said. He pledged that if elected, his administration would eliminate the betting tax.

The former president recognized that the introduction of the tax was partly due to conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of a broader economic agreement. However, Mahama stressed the need for alternative revenue sources to replace the lost income from the betting tax.

“We know this government and IMF have signed an agreement, which is why they introduced the betting tax, but we have to find alternative revenue to plug the hole that the betting tax will cost,” he stated.

In addition to his stance on betting taxes, Mahama addressed concerns about national economic challenges and the state of young people in Ghana. He criticized the current administration for failing to address high unemployment and mismanagement of resources.

John Mahama vows to solve unemployment problem

“The situation for young people has become increasingly troubling. Unemployment is high, leaving many of you without hope or direction. Every day seems worse for most young people, while a few people misuse our resources. This cannot continue! We shall recover every stolen money!” he declared.

Mahama also highlighted his concerns about Ghana’s education system, which he believes is deteriorating under the NPP administration. He promised to make significant changes to improve the sector and better support the youth.

The NDC flagbearer’s pledge to abolish the betting tax and address broader economic issues is part of his campaign strategy as he seeks to win the upcoming elections and lead Ghana towards recovery and progress.
