Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Cincinnati Open Following Paris Olympics Victory

Defending champion Novak Djokovic, aged 37, has announced his withdrawal from next week’s Cincinnati Open, according to tournament organizers.

This decision comes shortly after Djokovic’s impressive triumph in the singles event at the Paris Olympics, where he achieved a historic milestone. By securing the Olympic gold medal, Djokovic joined an elite group of players who have won all four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold throughout their careers.

Tournament Director Bob Moran commented on Djokovic’s withdrawal, noting, “We certainly understand that it is a quick turnaround from his Olympic triumph to come to Cincinnati. His title run here last year was so memorable, and we are eager to see him on court again soon.” Djokovic’s withdrawal paves the way for French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to take his place in the tournament draw.

Last year, Djokovic made his return to U.S. soil after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions. During that time, he captured the Cincinnati title by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final. This victory set the stage for Djokovic’s subsequent triumph at the U.S. Open, where he clinched his 24th Grand Slam title.
