Erik ten Hag says next season will be ‘survival of the fittest’

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is eager to move past the uncertainties of the previous season and embrace the new campaign with renewed determination.

The Dutchman, whose FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May played a crucial role in securing his position, has had his contract extended to 2026 following a comprehensive review by new co-owners Ineos.

Ten Hag, known for his confidence, emphasized his readiness to succeed regardless of past challenges. “If they don’t want me, I will go and win somewhere else,” Ten Hag declared after the FA Cup triumph, showcasing his self-belief and commitment to success.

As the team embarks on its pre-season tour, Ten Hag is focused on starting afresh. “We left everything behind and we are looking forward. It’s a great project. There will be ups and downs but now we are very energised, with a good dynamic and good spirit. We want to work and we want to win,” he said.

Erik ten Hag ready to cop with injuries

Last season’s injury woes, particularly in defense, significantly impacted United’s performance. To address these issues, Ten Hag has made substantial investments, including nearly £90m on French defender Leny Yoro and Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee. Additionally, United has strengthened its medical staff with Gary O’Driscoll and Jordan Reece joining from Arsenal.

“This season will be the survival of the fittest,” Ten Hag noted. “The load on the players is so high. We are not the only team with so many injuries and we were not even the worst. It was our bad luck. But the pressure on players is immense, with the new model in Europe.”

United’s FA Cup success has earned them a spot in the Europa League, which now features eight first-phase games, adding to the team’s already demanding schedule. Ten Hag is continuing to seek new signings, with full-back and central defense being key areas of focus.

Manchester United faces Arsenal in a pre-season tour game on Saturday, marking an important step as they prepare for the new season.
